Faith, Family, and Early Detection: One Man’s Journey with Prostate Cancer

As we reflect on the power of faith, the importance of family, and the strength it takes to face the unknown, one heartfelt testimony reminds us why regular health screenings, especially for men, are so vital.

At 72 years old, this Virgin Islands native had much to be thankful for. A man of faith, he had lived a healthy life with only minor issues like high cholesterol and high blood pressure. He was diligent about his annual check-ups and had never undergone any major procedures requiring anesthesia. But in 2022, a painful cyst on his thigh led him to seek medical attention, and while it was thankfully not cancerous, it marked the beginning of a journey he never anticipated.

Even before the cyst, he had been experiencing nighttime chills, an unusual symptom he couldn't explain. When his daughter came home for the holidays, her concern led them to visit a doctor who suspected an infection or pneumonia. Bloodwork was ordered, but this devoted father never disclosed his PSA results to his daughter, his caregiver, and as he lovingly calls her, "the BOSS."

A twist of fate, and a small slip from his wife, changed everything. While out running errands, his daughter discovered that he had undergone a CT scan ordered by his urologist. Without hesitation, she scheduled follow-up appointments and insisted on taking immediate action. Despite his wishes to delay treatment until the new year and return to the Virgin Islands, his children came together, created a family group chat, and made a decision: he would stay in Georgia, undergo treatment, and complete all follow-ups before heading home.

In October 2023, he had prostate cancer surgery. His follow-up appointments brought good news, his PSA levels were dropping. But the family’s journey wasn’t over. Just weeks later, his wife of 53 years began to feel unwell and was also diagnosed with cancer.

Despite the challenges, he continues to give thanks to God, for life, for family, and for the opportunity to still be here today.

His message is simple but powerful:

“I want to encourage all the men to please go out and get checked. It might just save your life.”

Men, especially as we age, it’s easy to put off routine screenings or ignore unusual symptoms. But early detection can make all the difference. Whether it’s a PSA test, a physical, or simply listening to the people who care about you, take action! Because sometimes, it's not just about adding years to your life, but adding life to your years.

If this story touched you, share it with the men in your life. Let’s spread awareness and encourage each other to prioritize our health. Faith, family, and early detection, they’re a powerful trio.
